Bridgewater Housing Authority History
The Bridgewater Housing Authority (BHA) was founded in 1965. The first senior development on Hemlock Drive was built in 1967. It consists of forty, 3-room apartments, the community room and laundry. In 1972 fifty-six more similar senior apartments were added on Hemlock Drive.Seeing the need for family housing, in 1981 and 1982 the BHA purchased seven homes consisting of twelve family units. The family units are scattered throughout town and range in size from 2 to 4 bedrooms. They also started a section 8 program in 1982 that consists of 69 housing choice vouchers. The tenant is issued a section 8 voucher and then finds an appropriate apartment. Section 8 vouchers are portable meaning you can relocate to any other city or town.

As the senior generation grew so did their need for affordable housing. Land was purchased on Main Street for the purpose of expanding the senior housing program. In 1992 Heritage Circle, off of Main Street, was ready for occupancy. Heritage Circle consists of forty, 3-room apartments and 10 congregate apartments. Congregate apartments are similar to dormitory style accommodations. The resident has 1 large room with a half bathroom. Residents share the kitchen, shower and formal living room areas. Heritage Circle also has a community room, laundry room as well as the main offices for the BHA.

In 1992 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts passed legislation that 13.5% of the senior housing units must be available for young (under 60) disabled tenants.

All rents are calculated on the tenant’s income.

The Bridgewater Housing Authority will continue to promote and maintain affordable rental opportunities in a safe and sanitary manner.
